Course Information for Students
Who is this course for?
This is a roll-on roll-off programme for adults to develop their riding skills. Lessons are sold in blocks of four: it can be a stand-alone experience or you may want to book further blocks to provide continuous lessons over a longer period of time.
The lessons are taken on an individual basis for ½ hr or on a group basis with riders of a similar level for an hour. All levels of ability are catered for, from complete beginners to advanced riders. All beginners’ lessons are on an individual basis.
Prior to enrolling, please email Sally Foskett (Sally Foskett@derby-college.ac.uk) who will be able to guide you through the process and help you book into a lesson slot. Make sure you leave a contact phone number!
Entry Requirements
In order to ensure the welfare of our horses, we operate a personal weight restriction of no more than 13 stone. All riders will be weighed in their riding attire prior to the start of the course.
What will you learn?
During the sessions you will improve your practical riding ability and experience. Your first lesson will be an initial assessment where individual targets and aims will be set and the following sessions will build on these targets. It doesn’t matter where your start point is: it could be that you haven’t had any experience at all or you could be looking to build on prior knowledge.
We have a great range of horses at College, but – as welfare is paramount – you will only be mounted on horses which suit your height and weight. This could narrow down the selection of horses we can offer you.
How will you learn?
This course will be delivered on-site.
What will you need to bring with you?
You will be required to supply your own:
- Riding gloves
- Correctly fitted and up-to-current-safety-standard riding hat, with a tight chin strap
- Specific riding footwear, not Dubarry style country boots
- Correctly fitted and up-to-current-safety-standard body protector for pole work and jumping
Please do not wear necklaces and earrings.
How will you be assessed?
There will be no formal assessment although you will receive verbal feedback during and at the end of each lesson and will be set targets for improvement.
