Who is this course for?
With this qualification, a career in theatrical special effects could be yours. You will study a variety of units including creative hairdressing design, fashion and photographic make-up, airbrush make-up for the face, camouflage make-up and how to apply prosthetic pieces.
As part of your studies, you will be required to complete work experience to support the development of your skills and behaviours to enable you to succeed within the industry.
Entry Requirements
You need to be highly motivated and to demonstrate a keen interest in your chosen subject. Offers of a place on the course are dependent on your qualifications and practical aptitude. You will need:
- a minimum of five GCSEs at grade D or above including English and Maths (grade C/4 or above) and Science
- an Intermediate Diploma in the chosen subject to a Merit or Distinction standard
You will have an interview and initial assessment in maths and English and will attend a skills test. You will also be required to present a current portfolio of work at your interview. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the interview but not the initial assessment. If you are successful, you will be allocated a place to study.
We may be able to take into consideration your previous experience in your chosen subject.
What will you learn?
You will study creative hairdressing design, fashion and photographic make-up, airbrush make-up for the face, camouflage make-up and how to apply prosthetic pieces.
You will also develop your skills in maths and English, which will support your progression to further study or employment.
How will you learn?
This course will be delivered on-site.
What will you need to bring with you?
A kit and uniform is required. Details will be available from the curriculum team during the interviews.
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed through a range of methods including practical observation, oral questioning, written tests, assignments and preparing a portfolio of evidence.
Maths and English are assessed through a controlled assessment and a GCSE involves a final exam.

Further study
You could consider a Level 4 programme where you would also continue to develop your skills in maths and English.

You can work as a make-up artist for the film and TV industry or as a stylist for the fashion industry.
