Apprenticeship – Hospitality Supervisor – Level 3

Hospitality supervisors work across a wide variety of businesses including bars, restaurants, cafés, conference centres, banqueting venues, hotels or contract caterers. They provide vital support to management teams and are capable of independently supervising hospitality services and running shifts.

They typically work under pressure delivering fantastic customer service. Motivating a team is essential to their role. The majority of supervisors’ skills and knowledge are the same but supervisors may specialise in specific functions or work across a variety of functions which reflect the multi-functional nature of the industry.

Entry requirements are to be decided by the employer at the start of apprenticeship. It is, however, expected that the individual will have worked operationally in the industry before embarking on this apprenticeship standard.

Your apprentice needs to demonstrate knowledge and skills in four main areas:

• Business
• People
• Customers
• Leadership

Hospitality Supervisors then select one of the following options as their specialist function:

• Food and Beverage Supervisor
• Bar Supervisor
• Housekeeping Supervisor
• Concierge Supervisor
• Front Office Supervisor
• Events Supervisor
• Hospitality Outlet Supervisor

Your apprentice will need to demonstrate the following behaviours:

• A personal drive to achieve the business values, vision and objectives
• Operate astutely and credibly on all matters that affect business finance
• Operate with a quality focus to achieve the best for the business
• Be solution-focussed and remain calm under pressure, adopting a constructive attitude to dealing with problems and driving a positive outcome
• Advocate and adhere to the importance of working safely and legally in the best interest of all people
• Encourage the team to demonstrate personal pride in their roles through a consistently positive and professional approach
• Strive to continuously improve the effectiveness of personal communications
• Proactively encourage a customer-centric culture
• Act as a role model operating in an empathic, fair and consistent professional manner
• Positively support the benefits of working within standard business operating procedures
• Champion the responsible use of technology
• Contribute to the review process, being aware of the individual needs of the team
• Encourage team members to see the importance of their role within the wider business and opportunities for development
• Be proactive in supporting sales and marketing activities
• Demonstrate a belief in the brand and product the business offers
• Lead by example to maximise performance

On completion, your apprentice will have gained the Advanced Apprenticeship Hospitality Supervisor.

Your apprentice will be supported and assessed to prepare them for an end point assessment at the end of their course. This will consist of the following:

• 120-minute on demand test
• Four-hour practical observation
• Business Project with 30-minute formal presentation

Followed by:

• 90-minute professional discussion

The first three activities can be completed in any order.

All assessment activities must be completed within two months.

Your apprentice will be supported and assessed in the workplace. The end point assessment will take place locally or within the College.

You will need to provide your apprentice with any PPE required legally and to help them to undertake their role safely.

Further Study

On completion of this apprenticeship, your apprentice could move on to a higher-level apprenticeship within hospitality.
