Who is this course for?
The city of Derby and the surrounding area is world-renowned for its engineering and manufacturing industry and is populated with world leading employers and their high-quality supply chains.
The engineering sector is also still growing at a considerable rate, particularly with the development of new technologies which in turn has led to skill shortages and demand for high performing engineers.
Using the latest suite of qualifications, the one-year full-time BTEC Foundation Award in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering has been designed to support school leavers and adults who wish to further their development as engineers, leading to a highly rewarding and well paid career in this sector. The course can also be taken as part of a career enhancement route.
Entry Requirements
Prior achievement of the following GCSEs and grades is necessary:
- English 4/C
- Maths 4/C
- Science 4/C
For adults wishing for career advancement or change, prior achievement of an Engineering qualification at Level 2, or relevant work experience, will be required. Alternatively, they will need evidence of study of related vocational qualifications at Levels 2/3.
What will you learn?
To achieve the BTEC Foundation Award in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, students must complete one mandatory unit, and at least two optional units. The mandatory unit is:
- Health and Safety in the Workplace
Optional units available include:
- Further Engineering Mathematics
- Electro, Pnuematic and Hydraulic Systems and Devices
- Selecting and Using Programmable Logic Controllers
- Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices and Circuits
- Manufacturing Planning
- Industrial Robot Technology
- Engineering Project
Opportunity also exists on this study programme to develop students’ practical skills.

This course will be delivered on-site.

In addition to regular writing materials and a scientific calculator, specific PPE may need to be purchased for selected activities.

You will be assessed by a variety of methods including:

- Practical assessments
- Presentations

Where next?
On successful achievement of the Foundation Award in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, you could progress to a BTEC Award/Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
Careers
Alternatively, and with employment in a qualifying role, an apprenticeship in engineering or career as an engineering technician would be possible: this qualification can be used as credits/evidence towards the apprenticeship knowledge elements.
