Who is this course for?
You could be working in a number of settings such as a children’s home, a residential special school or a secure children’s home. The children might be living on their own or in a larger group.
Your role will involve taking the lead in developing and delivering the child’s placement plan and working with the child to support their health, education, social and day-to-day needs. You will play a significant role in helping them to thrive and fulfil their potential.
The apprenticeship involves:
- A Level 3 Diploma
- Maths Level 2 Functional Skills
- English Level 2 Functional Skills
- Level 4 End-point Assessment
- 20% off-the-job training to be competed prior to the Diploma
Entry Requirements
You need:
- A good standard of English and maths, with screening to be above Level 1
- Employment in the sector for 30 hours or more a week
- Prior experience
What will you learn?
- To gain the skills and knowledge to support young people in a residental setting
- To understand and carry out the legislation within that area
- To gain the skills and knowledge to appropriately challenge and/or offer alternative perspectives with the children, young person or family
- To identify influences on the individual and the family and support them to make informed choices
- To lead on the development and recording of holistic plans, delivery of interventions and evaluation of their effectiveness
- To identify and address barriers to accessing resources
- To identify and manage evidence-based approaches and evaluate their effectiveness
- To contribute to the development of a resilient, consistent and persistent approach to practice
- To understand the duties, responsibilities, boundaries and ethical nature of the role
- To understand theories and guidelines underpinning sound practice
- To contribute to and update your own CPD, identifying gaps in your own learning and development
- To understand the legislation and compliance requirements for residential care
- To appreciate the aspirations for a child in residential care
- To understand group living and group dynamics
- To understand legislation and the Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs and Disability
The programme also involves:
- Maths and English Level 2 Functional Skills, unless you are exempt with GCSE graded C and above or 5 and above
- 20% off-the-job training to be recorded for your CPD
- End-point assessment
How will you learn?
The apprenticeship will be delivered in the workplace and on-site.

You will need access to a laptop as the portfolio is online.

Where next?
You could advance to the Level 5 Leadership and Management qualification for the residential young persons’ sector but you will need to be in a management position.

What is required from the employer in the workplace?
- Training and support so that the apprentice is able to complete the qualification
- Paid time to attend block week or day release at College for Functional Skills training if needed
- Time with the assessor to complete the progress review every 8-10 weeks

Yes – if they need to complete their Maths and English qualifications. Delivery is flexible.

What progression can my apprentice expect after completion of their apprenticeship?
They will be more knowledgeable about all aspects of the sector, paving the way for promotion.
They can progress to a Level 5 qualification but will need to be in a management position.
