Course Information for Students

Who is this course for?

The broad purpose of the Early Years Practitioner (EYP) occupation is to work and interact directly with children on a day-to-day basis, supporting the planning and delivery of activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes within the ethos of the setting. An EYP works as part of a professional team ensuring the welfare and care of children under the guidance and supervision of an Early Years Educator, teacher or other suitably qualified professional in the workforce.

This apprenticeship entails:

  • A Level 2 Diploma 
  • Maths and English Level 1 Functional Skills with a Level 2 uplift 
  • End-point assessment 
  • 20% off-the-job training 
  • One day at College to learn the theory of being an Early Years Practitioner.  
  • Full support from an assessor who is also your tutor

Entry Requirements

You need:

  • to be working in an early years environment with a range of children from babies to five-year-olds
  • a good standard of English and maths
  • an ambition to pursue an early years career

What will you learn?

  • Level 1 Maths and English uplifted to Level 2
  • Off-the-job training hours
  • End-point assessment
  • Level 2 Diploma covering working in partnership with carers and parents; safeguarding and child protection; using play to support children’s learning and growth; use and importance of hygiene; communciation and wellbeing of  children; and health, safety and wellbeing of  children 

You will learn a range of theoretical knowledge about health and safety, hazards and regulations relating to looking after babies and children – including signs and symptoms of injuries and safeguarding policies and procedures. 

You will also develop professional behaviour, communication techniques, knowledge of nutrition and hygiene, and the ability to keep documentary records.

The apprenticeship will be delivered in the workplace and on-site.

Are they any entry requirements for my apprentice?

The apprentice should be employed in a nursery looking after a range of  children from babies up to five-year-olds.

The employer should provide support, training and paid leave to attend College on a Tuesday.

Will my apprentice need to come into college?

Theory class is on a Tuesday. If the apprentice needs to complete their Functional Skills, that will also take place on this day. The day release should be paid as part of their working week.

They will need a laptop.

What progression can my apprentice expect after completion of their apprenticeship?

They can consider a Level 3 Advanced Practitioner programme.
