Who is this course for?

Building on this success, Derby College Group is offering a new and innovative route to qualifying as an assessor, trainer, workshop demonstrator and/or coach in the education and training sector. 

Achieving the Higher Apprenticeship Assessor-Coach qualification will enable you to develop and assess apprentices, workplace students and workshop training. With apprenticeships expected to expand significantly, this will enhance your employment opportunities and employability.  We can tailor the learning to meet your job role and the needs of your employer.

In order to evidence the Apprenticeship Standards and become an outstanding assessor-coach who has a positive impact on apprentice development, you will work towards a set of qualifications bespoke to your needs and the needs of your employer.  You must achieve:

  • Level 1 in Safeguarding
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and ICT if you do not have these at entry (or their equivalent)
  • End-point Assessment to show you have evidenced the Apprenticeship Standards (conducted by an external End-point Assessment Centre)

Depending on your role, your employer may also wish you to achieve:

  • A Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement or Level 2 Award in Assessing Competence in the Workplace
  • A Level 3 Award in Education and Training or Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training which will develop your skillset in delivering effective training to groups

Learning time is organised on a flexible basis to accommodate your employer’s needs and your needs, although you will normally be required to attend College to achieve the Functional Skills qualifications.  There will be developmental observations of your practice.

 

Entry Requirements

  • Candidates may have achieved Maths, English and ICT qualifications at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE grade C/4, or above) prior to commencing their training. Those that have not must achieve this prior to taking the end-point assessment
  • Candidates need a qualification, at an appropriate level, and relevant up-to-date experience in their vocational/subject specialism
  • Many candidates will already possess a Level 3 qualification in Assessing. Depending on the specific education and training context, employers (and/or awarding organisations) may require candidates without an Assessor qualification to achieve this prior to completion of their apprenticeship

What will you learn?

How will you be assessed?

You will have study time to work with your assessor one-to-one and attend small group teaching workshops.  This will support you to prepare for end-point assessment, consisting of professional discussion and observation.  This is conducted by an independent end-point assessment centre. The end-point assessment consists of:

  1. Submission of a showcase of exemplary practice
  2. A professional discussion informed by the showcase
  3. Observations of assessor-coach practice followed by questions and answers

Where next?

  • Secure a permanent position as an assessor-coach or related role in the FE and Skills Sector or in a private sector organisation which employs apprentices
  • Progress to a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or a full teaching role and qualification such as the Level 5 Certificate of Education

  • Progress to a Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring

The Assessor-Coach may also be eligible to progress to a full teaching role within an education and training provider organisation.

Apprenticeship summary

The Assessor-Coach (AC) role has emerged within the Education and Training Sector (ETS) over the last 30 years, originally as a result of the implementation of vocational (competence-based) qualifications (notably NVQs) and formalised work-based education and training.

The AC is a dual professional, using their up-to-date professional knowledge and skills to support vocational and professional development across the formal ETS as well as in any employer setting, and at any level. They may, for example, coach and assess apprentices, trainees or new recruits (ranging from young entrants to new CEOs) in the workplace, commensurate with their own level of experience and qualifications, as required by their employer or their sector.  

ACs coach and assess vocational learners, usually on a one-to-one basis, in a range of learning environments.  Coaching skills involve complex communication techniques to actively listen, provide feedback and to engage learners in planning their individualised learning programme. These skills are also integral to assessing learners’ competence in relation to work-related/industry standards and life skills. 

The Standard consists of the following:

  1. Plan coaching and assessment
  2. Deliver coaching and support using effective coaching practice
  3. Assess learners using effective vocational assessments
  4. Support quality improvement

Are they any entry requirements for my apprentice?

  • An apprenticeship contract as an assessor-coach (or assessor) for a minimum of 21 months (incorporating 15 months study and end-point assessment).
  • A qualification, at an appropriate level, and relevant up-to-date experience in the candidate’s vocational/subject specialism.
  • Ideally an approved Level 2 in Maths and English (GCSE/Functional Skills).

What is required from the employer in the workplace?

  1. A caseload of apprentices, workplace learners or workshop learners
  2. Access to a specialist mentor to support the development of the apprentice

  1. Inspire, motivate and raise learners’ aspirations through their passion for the sector
  2. Operate at all times to ethical and legal standards and within professional boundaries
  3. Model and encourage mutual respect, displaying a deep understanding of equality and diversity, with and between learners, colleagues and appropriate agencies
  4. Be resilient and adaptable when dealing with challenge and change, maintaining focus and self-control
  5. Value the importance of maths, English and ICT skills in the learners’ future economic and social well-being
  6. Evaluate and improve their own professional practice in relation to the Professional Standards for Teachers and Educators in the Education and Training Sector

  • Level 1 Safeguarding qualification
  • Level 2 in English, Maths and ICT

What will the assessment look like?

The end-point assessment consists of:

Will my apprentice need to come into college?

Not necessarily.  We can offer one-to-one development and training in the workplace.  Some College-based workshops can be arranged too.
