Building on this success, DCG is offering a well-established and innovative route to qualifying as a teacher in the Post-14 sector: a supportive and rigorous Higher Apprenticeship route.  The apprentice teacher will earn as they learn and enjoy significant opportunity to develop their professional practice in classroom, work-based and workshop settings.

  • The apprentice teacher route to full qualification offers an expansive and rigorous work-based route to developing and qualifying teachers in the Learning and Skills Sector, which includes post-14 education (Key Stage 4 in schools)
  • It contributes to succession planning and may alleviate recruitment issues in shortage subjects by providing a subject specialism in teaching STEM, SEND, Maths or English
  • For schools and organisations required to pay the Apprenticeship Levy, it offers a return on that levy and supports organisations to meet the Government target of employing apprentices.

Entry Requirements

  • Teacher apprenticeship contract – minimum of 2.5 years to enable end-point assessment following two years of learning
  • Evidence of a Level 3 (at least) qualification in own subject-specialism
  • Evidence of an approved Level 2 qualification in English Language and Maths
  • A mentor in the organisation where you work to support your development

What will you learn?

In order to evidence the Apprenticeship Standards and become an outstanding teacher who has a positive impact on learners in the sector, you will work towards a set of qualifications.  If you haven’t already got the following qualifications, you are required to achieve:

  • A full teaching qualification at Level 5
  • A Level 2 Award in Prevent and Safeguarding strategies, with a whole unit devoted to anti-radicalisation

In addition to mandatory qualifications you may wish to enhance your studies by undertaking optional short courses in:

  • Coaching and Mentoring
  • Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties

This course will be delivered in the workplace and on-site.

How will you be assessed?

You will have study time to work in your curriculum team and to attend College to work towards qualifications, meet with your personal tutor and plan your own professional development/prepare for end-point assessment. 

The apprentice teacher will be assessed using varied methods, including assignments, collaborative presentations, poster presentations and reflections.  Alongside this, there will be a minimum of eight observations of practice conducted by our expert tutors in the Teacher Training Academy or your workplace mentor. 

You will also have an end-point assessment consisting of a thematic case study to evidence the knowledge and skills set out in the Apprenticeship Standard; submission of an online presentation showing your journey with ICT skills; a professional discussion and two observations of practice by the end-point assessor followed by questions and answers.  This is conducted by an independent end-point assessment centre.  Assessment is robust, meaningful and developmental.

  • A permanent position as a teacher in Post-14 Education, for example in schools, FE Colleges, training providers and prison education

Apprenticeship summary

Upon successful completion of this programme, the apprentice will become a qualified Learning and Skills Teacher (LST), who is a dual professional. They will already have achieved competence in a vocational or subject specialism and this programme will support them to become a qualified teacher. This means that many teachers in the Education and Training Sector (ETS) begin teaching as a second, or even later, career.

The LST role is pivotal to the success of traineeship and apprenticeship programmes in delivering effective vocational education and training that meets both learners’ and employers’ needs. It consists of the following knowledge and skills:

  1. Curriculum Design and Planning Learning
  2. Design and Deliver Learning Sessions and Activities to Enable Effective Learning
  3. Facilitate Individualised Learning
  4. Quality Assure Outcomes for Learners

Are they any entry requirements for my apprentice?

What qualification will my apprentice gain?

1.  Certificate in Education (Level 5) or the equivalent

2.  Level 2 Safeguarding

3.  A programme of learning in ICT to equip the apprentice with the skills for using ICT to enable learning

What will the assessment look like?

In addition to completing the assessments required by the Certificate in Education programme, the apprentice will complete a professional discussion informed by a:

  • Thematic case study
  • Online presentation

The apprentice will create and submit a thematic case study mapped to the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours across the assessment themes.

The independent assessor will evaluate the thematic case study and prepare questions for the subsequent professional discussion.

The apprentice will prepare and submit an online presentation demonstrating their journey towards their mastery of current technologies. The independent assessor will evaluate the online presentation and prepare questions for the subsequent professional discussion.

Two teaching observations mapped to the skills and behaviours across the assessment themes will be observed (face-to-face) and followed by questions and answers, as appropriate. The grades are Fail, Pass or Distinction.

Will my apprentice need to come into college?

Yes, there is a College-based weekly theory session each Monday from 14.00-20.00 to provide opportunities for learning, working towards the Certificate in Education, developing ICT skills, developing the Thematic Case Study and online presentation and preparing for the end-point assessment professional discussion/observations.
