Course Information for Students
Who is this course for?
This new Level 4 standard comprises:
- A Level 3 Diploma
- Functional Skills Maths and English at Level 2
- End-point assessment at Level 4
- Pathway 1: Practitioner in Children’s Residential Care.
Please note: this is not an Early Years qualification.
Entry Requirements
You should:
- Be working in an environment where you are supervising and working with residential children and young people – on a minimum of 30 hours per week contract.
- Undertake the Disclosure and Barring Service process and provide evidence of the results
- Have a good standard of English and maths
What will you learn?
Along with more information on the Institute for Apprenticeships, you will gain knowledge and understanding of:
- domestic violence
- membership of gangs
- missing children
- online activity
- radicalisation and the Prevent agenda
- harm to children and vulnerable adults
You will learn a range of behaviours to adopt depending on the situation and will also cover:
- the importance of communication to families
- child, adolescent and adult development
- the spectrum of the child’s or young person’s needs
- how to support families
- the principles of effective assessment and the importance of analysis and professional judgement.
The course features Functional Maths and English at Level 2 and ICT will be embedded throughout.
There is an end-point assessment.
How will you learn?
The apprenticeship will be delivered in the workplace and on-site.
What will you need to bring with you?
A percentage of the cost for the apprenticeship will be met by the employer, depending on the apprentice’s age. This will be discussed at the initial stage of enrolment.
The Diploma itself costs £1,500 – which could be covered by a student loan – if you do not want to do the apprenticeship.
How will you be assessed?
Assessment will be undertaken by your assessor and the process will be carefully planned and supported.
The end-point assessment will be undertaken by an individual from the awarding body.
Where next?
You could consider taking a relevant Level 5 qualification.
You could also progress your career as a supervisor in a residential environment.

Apprenticeship summary

Are they any entry requirements for my apprentice?
The apprentice should:
- be over 18
- hold a DBS
- be working in a supervisory position equivalent to Level 4 on a minimum 30 hours contract
- be allowed time away to study and paid time to attend College for Functional Skills or other classes
What is required from the employer in the workplace?
There should be:
- Support and training from the employer (20% within the apprentice’s working week)
- Paid time for the apprentice to attend College for Functional Skills or optional classes
- A 30-hour minimum contract for the apprentice
- A commitment to completing ten-week reviews with the assessor and the apprentice
- A safe environment for the apprentice

Will my apprentice need to come into college?
If they are not exempt for Functional Skills, your apprentice will need to come into College. (GCSE grade 4/C and above or Functional Skills Level 2 are all exemptions.)
They will also need to come into College for screening to establish their academic level before they are enrolled.
We do run structured classes at College for the Diploma but these are optional.
Is there any specialist equipment required?
Nothing additional is required.
What progression can my apprentice expect after completion of their apprenticeship?
They could advance to a Level 5 qualification.

Will the college help me find an apprentice?
