The Level 2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture will enable you to design and maintain gardens, borders and tree and shrub schemes. It will also give you other horticultural skills including hard landscaping and pesticide use.

Who is this course for?
The Level 2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture will enable you to design and maintain gardens, borders and tree and shrub schemes. It will also give you other horticultural skills including hard landscaping and pesticide use.
Entry Requirements
For this course you will need to have a Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture or – if you are a mature learner – demonstrate a very keen interest in the subject.
What will you learn?
The course will be made up of:
- Surveying, drawing office, computer aided design, plantsmanship including design and maintenance of rose gardens, herbaceous borders, tree and shrub schemes.
- Hard landscape: including brickwork, paving, drystone wall paving, fencing and pergolas.
- Fruit and vegetable growing, plus glasshouse production.
There is also a part of the course where the students survey, design and build a garden at College or within the community.
The programme leads to NPTC Certificates in:
- Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work
- PA1 and PA6 – safe use of pesticides
- Abrasive Wheel Certificate and Nail Gun Certificate.
Work experience includes an option to take a RHS Practical Certificate, plus Besafe training and experience with brush cutters, hedge cutters and pole saws. There are one-day workshops too.

How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed via set work and methods such as electronic quizzes. There is the use of Microsoft Teams for virtual tutorials.
