Course Information for Students

Who is this course for?

The new apprenticeship standards have been developed by employer groups for specific occupations. They contain on-programme training and an end-point assessment. The end-point assessment must be delivered by an independent organisation recognised on the Register of Apprentice Assessment Organisations. Employers of apprentices will select an organisation from the Register to conduct independent end-point assessment of their apprentices.

Preferably candidates will already have an employer ready to start their apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have some experience working in a customer service industry or an existing job role within a leisure complex or activity centre.

Preferably candidates should have already achieved grade 4 or above in English and Maths or have achieved a Level 2 equivalent qualification.

What will you learn?

The Level 3 Leisure Management Certificate covers:

  • Team Leadership
  • Customer Care
  • Managing Health, Safety and Welfare
  • Understanding the Active Leisure Sector
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Continued Professional Development

You will also need to successfully complete:

  • First Aid at Work
  • Level 3 Pool Plant Operations

After a minimum of 12 months, you should have the evidence and experience to fulfil the following:

  • A minimum of 12 months’ experience working as a Leisure Duty Manager in a workplace environment
  • Various learning and development activities
  • On-the-job and off-the-job training
  • Completion and achievement of the Level 3 Pool Plant Operator Certificate and a First Aid at Work qualification
  • English and Maths at Level 2 (where required)
  • Knowledge, skills and behaviours related to the Leisure Duty Manager standard
  • Regular performance reviews (every two months) with your on-programme assessor and employer and/or training provider that record your progress against the standard
  • Discussion of your progress at meetings that you agree upon and record in writing
  • A sign-off meeting with your employer/training provider and on-programme assessor to signify that you have met the minimum requirements for the standards with regards to knowledge, skills and behaviours and that you are ready for end-point assessment

How will you learn?

This course will be delivered in the workplace and on-site.

What will you need to bring with you?

There are no additional costs. You may be required to attend classes away from the work environment in order to fulfil the knowledge required to complete the apprenticeship. This may result in travel costs.

How will you be assessed?

There are three elements that, combined, will assess your competency across the whole standard for Leisure Duty Manager:

  1. Project
  2. Presentation
  3. Professional discussion

Are they any entry requirements for my apprentice?

What is required from the employer in the workplace?

Each apprentice needs to be able to carry out the expectations of the standards. They need to be working as a duty manager (under supervision) in order to be able to evidence the requirements of the apprenticeship standard effectively. They will also need to complete First Aid at Work and a Pool Plant Operations qualification (If this is not available on-site, access to opportunities to complete this qualification will need to be sought.)

Behaviours expected within the role

Professional behaviours are expected that are pertinent to the job role. These behaviours should mirror the existing workforce in line with the company’s policies and procedures. Excellent customer service and success in developing leadership skills are expected.

What qualification will my apprentice gain?

  • First Aid at Work
  • Level 3 Pool Plant Operations
  • Level 3 Leisure Management

What will the assessment look like?

There are three elements to the end-point assessment:

  1. Project
  2. Presentation with questions and answers
  3. Interview

Will my apprentice need to come into college?

An assessor will visit the workplace. It is expected that 20% of the apprentice’s time is set aside for working on their apprenticeship evidence.

They may be invited in to develop their English or maths skills in either a block or regular session, depending on their need and availability.

Is there any specialist equipment required?

You must be able to provide suitable time for the apprentice to undertake the duty manager’s responsibilities. This may require the apprentice to manage staff. The apprentice should be able to experience activities in the role of duty leisure manager and be able to interact in this role with customers and other staff members.

Access to Pool Plant equipment is required in order to complete this aspect of the standard. 

What progression can my apprentice expect after completion of their apprenticeship?

They can progress to other sector-related CPD in Business, Team Leadership, Health and Safety or leisure roles such as Gym Instruction, Sports Coaching or Lifeguarding.

What job roles will this apprenticeship be suitable for?
