Lexis is a full-time programme for 16 to 19-year-old learners whose first language is not English. Its overall objective is to help learners improve their English and gain qualifications to enable them to progress into further education or employment.

Who is this course for?
Lexis is a full-time programme for 16 to 19-year-old learners whose first language is not English. Its overall objective is to help learners improve their English and gain qualifications to enable them to progress into further education or employment.
Entry Requirements
No formal qualifications are required. Students are interviewed and their English language skills are assessed before they are offered a place on the programme.
The course is free to the majority of students, unless they are classed as an international student (more details available on request).
What will you learn?
The main qualification, City & Guilds ESOL, is delivered for nine hours per week. The main programme is supported each week with Edexcel Functional Skills Maths for four and a half hours and City & Guilds Functional Skills ICT for one and a half hours. Enrichment, work experience and tutorials are all incorporated into the 16.5 hours per week full-time programme.
Following their initial assessment, students are placed into groups according to their level of English. This will range from beginner level to Level 1.
The enrichment, tutorial and work experience programme is designed to build students’ self-esteem and confidence, enabling them to gain the skills required to progress into further study or the world of work.

English, Maths and ICT are assessed by an end-of-year exam.
Where next?
Students can advance to the next level of the Lexis ESOL course or – once they have gained the appropriate level of English – can progress to other study programmes within the College or go out into the world of work.
