Schools 14-16 – City and Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy
Applications for the Pre-16 Provision open in February 2022. Please do not apply for this course if you will be 16 or older in September 2022. This course is part of our Pre-16 Provision and is only accessible if your school has agreed to fund the placement during Year 10 and 11.

Who is this course for?
The City and Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (600/2752/6) has been designed to build on young people’s interest and passion for the hair and beauty industry, covering a wide range of skills from styling, plaiting and twisting to make-up or nail art. Students will be able to develop the technical knowledge and skills they need for a successful career within the sector, whether it’s in a high street salon, on a cruise ship or in the film and television industry and have the opportunity to learn in our purpose-built SENSI training and commercial salons.
This course is delivered over two years, starting in Year 10, and students will study at the Roundhouse one day a week.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, you just need a strong interest in hair and/or beauty therapy.
What will you learn?
You will need to complete two mandatory units:
- Introduction to the hair and beauty sector – you will learn about the roles and careers opportunities available in the hair and beauty sector, the working patterns and the products, services and treatments offered by salons.

What will you need to bring with you?
Students must wear a hair and beauty polo shirt (purchased through Derby College Group), silver name pin, black trousers and enclosed black shoes for practical sessions. You will be required to supply your own writing materials.
How will you be assessed?
Students will be assessed through a mixture of internal assignments and a practical portfolio. All units must be successfully completed to gain this qualification.

Further Study
Upon completion of the qualification, and depending on the grades achieved and other qualifications (e.g. GCSEs) achieved, students may wish to progress to:
- The Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing or Beauty
- The Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing or Beauty
- An apprenticeship programme at Level 2 or 3
- A-levels
You will be able to access advice and guidance while studying at the College to learn more about the post-16 opportunities available for you.
