Applications for the Pre-16 Provision open in February 2022. Please do not apply for this course if you will be 16 or older in September 2022. This course is part of our Pre-16 Provision and is only accessible if your school has agreed to fund the placement during Year 10 and 11.

Who is this course for?
The City & Guilds Entry 3 Award in Construction Skills (601/0405/3) has been designed to give students an insight into different trades in the construction industry and is an ideal alternative for students who aren’t quite working at GCSE level yet. Students can develop occupational knowledge in three trade areas (Bricklaying, Plastering and Painting & Decorating) in our purpose-built Construction Academy, supporting progression into a trade specialism in post-16 education.
This course can be delivered over one or two years, in Year 10 or Year 11, and students will study at Ilkeston College for either half a day or one full day a week.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements: you just need a strong interest in the construction industry.
What will you learn?
Students will spend time in the three trade areas while completing the units below. For each unit, students will also learn how to identify the correct personal protective equipment (PPE), tools and materials for each task.
- Painting techniques
- Constructing half brick walling
- Preparing background surfaces and applying render coats

You will learn on-site
What will you need to bring with you?
Students must wear safety overalls (purchased through Derby College Group) and steel toe-cap boots in the workshop. You will be required to supply your own writing materials.
How will you be assessed?
Students are assessed through a portfolio containing photographic evidence of their practical work and supporting written statements. There are no external examinations for this qualification.

Further Study
Upon completion of the qualification, and depending on the grades achieved, students may wish to progress to a Level 1 trade-specific qualification (e.g. Bricklaying, Plastering, Plumbing).
You will be able to access advice and guidance while studying at the College to learn more about the post-16 opportunities available for you.
