Schools 14-16 – WJEC Level 1/Level 2 Award in Constructing the Built Environment
Applications for the Pre-16 Provision open in February 2022. Please do not apply for this course if you will be 16 or older in September 2022. This course is part of our Pre-16 Provision and is only accessible if your school has agreed to fund the placement during Year 10 and 11.

Who is this course for?
The WJEC Level 1/Level 2 Award in Constructing the Built Environment (603/3068/5)* has been developed in partnership with CITB to provide an engaging introduction to the construction industry from the build perspective. Students will learn the technical knowledge and skills needed within the construction industry over three trade areas (Brickwork, Plastering and Painting & Decorating).
The course is delivered over two years, starting in Year 10, and students will study at the Roundhouse (Hudson Building) for either half a day or a full day a week.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements: you just need a strong interest in construction.
What will you learn?
You will need to complete three mandatory units:
- Safety and security in construction – gain the knowledge and understanding to minimise risk to yourself and others and learn about health and safety in different contexts within construction.
Weighting: 25% of the course
Assessment: External examination
- Developing construction projects – interpret technical information to plan the refurbishment of a building and utilise your skills to carry out the work in the three trade areas.
Weighting: 50% of the course
Assessment: Internal assessment
- Planning construction projects – using the knowledge acquired in the first two units, learn how to plan straightforward built environment development projects.
Weighting: 25% of the course.
Assessment: External examination

What will you need to bring with you?
Students must wear safety overalls (purchased through Derby College Group) and steel toe-cap boots in the workshop. You will be required to supply your own writing materials.
How will you be assessed?
Students will be assessed through a mixture of internal assignments and external examinations.
All three units must be successfully completed to gain this qualification.

Further Study
Upon completion of the qualification, and depending on the grades achieved and other qualifications gained, students may wish to progress to:
- A Level 2 trade-specific qualification (e.g. Bricklaying, Plastering, Plumbing)
- A T Level in Professional Construction
- An apprenticeship programme at Level 2 or 3
- A-levels
You will be able to access advice and guidance while studying at the College to learn more about the post-16 opportunities available for you.

- Tradesperson (Bricklayer, Tiler, Plasterer, Plumber, Carpenter, etc.)
