Course Information for Students

This course will provide a transition year to the T Level in Science and will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare for Level 3 Science study.

Learners should have achieved at least a grade 4 in English, Maths and Science. 

Learners who want to progress to the Level 3 T Level in Science will need to have achieved five GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English, Maths and Science.

To enable students to achieve the entry requirements for the Level 3 T Level in Science, the Level 2 Foundation programme in Science offers them opportunities to improve their GCSE grades in English, Maths and Science. Students will study the following alongside a tutorial programme:

GCSE Combined Science

Worth two GCSEs, this GCSE is aimed at students looking to improve on their Biology, Chemistry and Physics knowledge and skills. It is excellent preparation for the T Level in Science but improved GCSE grades in Science mean that students could also consider transitioning to A-level study.

GCSE Maths or Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies

Students may look to improve on their GCSE Mathematics grade with options to take the foundation paper and target the grade 5 necessary for the T Level in Science or the higher paper and target grade 6 or above.

Alternatively, if students already have grade 5 or above in Maths, they will complete the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) which further develops their maths skills and provides opportunities to gain useful UCAS points. 

GCSE English

If students do not have the grade 5 in English necessary to complete the T Level in Science, they must also complete their GCSE in English Language.

Achieving a grade 5 will also provide them with options to study A-levels if they decide to change their pathway.

Students do not need to complete GCSE English if they have grade 5 or above.

Science Project

Students will also complete an individual or group science project to help them master the fundamentals of science, explore an area in more depth and develop research and independent study skills.

This course will be delivered on-site.

Students are asked to be prepared for learning and to have appropriate stationery and equipment e.g. a calculator.

There may be additional costs for field trips and further enrichment.

All elements of the course are assessed regularly in classrooms and through formal assessments.

Grades for GCSE Combined Science, GCSE Maths, GCSE English and the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies are all awarded on the basis of end-of-year examinations which will take place in May/June.

The Science project will be assessed on the completion of an individualised brief.

Further study

We envisage that many of our learners will progress to our Level 3 T Level in Science in order to access university or apprenticeships.

Careers

The qualification can lead to employment in a variety of fields.  These include:

  • Working as a quality control technician/analyst in a production plant laboratory, carrying out analytical tests using modern instrumentation and ICT
  • Interpreting data as a medical physics technician in a hospital, supporting the use of X-ray and other imaging/scanning instruments
