Welding student Hazir so happy with quality apprenticeship
Young welder Hazir Kadrailja never imagined he’d get an apprenticeship like the one he’s secured with Cavendish Nuclear in Somerset.
Hazir, who is 19, will soon join the leading nuclear services company’s four-year national apprenticeship scheme in Somerset. He will be joined by two other students from his level 3 Welding course at DCG.
Hazir always knew he wanted to go into engineering. As soon as he left school he took the Performing Engineering Operations level 2 at the Roundhouse to learn the basics.
He said: “While on that course our lecturer Sean talked to us about taking the level 3 in welding and I decided to give it a go. I trusted Sean; he has lot of engineering industry experience.
“Sean told us about the apprenticeship scheme at Cavendish Nuclear and three of us on my welding course all applied for a place.
He gave us advice on how to prepare for our online interview and what to expect from our assessments.
It was hard as there were only 12 apprentice places but we heard later that we’d all done quite well on assessment day.”
Once qualified Hazir would like to work as a welder for a few years then perhaps go into a management role in the engineering sector.
He added: “When I was at Derby College, I considered getting an apprenticeship but never imagined I’d find one like this. I thought it would be really hard to get such a good quality one.
I’d definitely recommend Derby College if you’re serious about an engineering career.
I’m the first person in my family to go into engineering and my mum and dad are so pleased about my apprenticeship.”
